A chef has diverse set of tasks. He has to train and manage the kitchen staff. He has to ensure proper storage of food, equipment and utensils. In terms of food preparation, a chef has to supervise and coordinate all cooking activities, buy food and estimate food consumption. Apart from this, he has to plan and price menus. A chef is also responsible for maintaining a safe and hygienic working environment.
A chef also requires a set of skills for the job. He has to have a keen sense of taste and smell. He must be able to recognize the slight changes in flavor. This will allow him to explore bold new flavor combinations and make them work. A successful chef is also creative and willing to experiment on new dishes.
Another quality a chef needs is being a team player. He must be able to manage workers, delegate responsibility and work closely with others. However, aspiring chefs should be prepared to work hard as they have to work evenings and weekends. A chef must also be well organised and able to plan ahead.
